Get Different by Mike Michalowicz: An Honest Review

I LOVE Mike Michalowicz, but I don’t think he’s infallible. I think it’s important to note that before moving forward.

For instance, I think Profit First, the Pumpkin Plan, and Fix This Next are pure gold. I have all three on audiobook and have listened to them more than once. Each time, I make sure I have a notebook nearby so I can write down the answers to my action items or any innovative thoughts I happen to have.

BUT one book of his I haven’t read is Surge. Actually, I just haven’t finished it. I may never. The book was far too much about WHY you should do something, but not HOW. I need to know how. I don’t want to study philosophy about growing a business, I want to actually grow my business.

I was afraid that Get Different would be a lot like Surge–that he would tell me I need to have unique marketing to stand out, but not tell me how. BOY, WAS I WRONG!!

The first way Mike taught the material in his book is that he showed real life examples of people doing something different in order to get marketing attention. My FAVORITE example was of a therapist, Ernestina, who was trying to market to the Latinx community. She watched an episode of 90 Day Fiance and shared her insights about how she could help the couple better handle their issues. It was a fun, lighthearted way for her to showcase her insights AND get the right kind of attention from her prospects.

The second way that Mike taught the material is that he gave prompts to help YOU think differently. This is what I truly needed–real direction on how to train my mind to think differently than my competition.

My favorite example of how to do this was when he recommends that you consider how different types of people would market your offer, such as your mother-in-law, a bartender, a religious leader, a farmer, or a clown. Trying to put yourself in someone else’s shoes really helps open your mind to all of the possibilities out there!

All in all, I loved Get Different. I have it on audiobook to listen to in the car and a paperback copy with 18 pink post-it notes sticking out.
