“Get Different” by Mike Michalowicz– Updated Review

It’s no secret that I’m a Mike Michalowicz fan. I love almost all of his books (there was one that I couldn’t finish. Stay tuned for that reveal!)

Get Different is Mike’s new (2021) book on Marketing! Since marketing is my biggest struggle, I could not WAIT to get this book! I expressed interest early on, and was able to be a part of his “launch team” for the book. We received a signed edition of the book a month prior to launch, and then we got incentives based on how many copies we sold.

Let’s just take a second to break that down–Mike gave out 100 copies of his book FOR FREE in exchange for the referrals and testimonials it would give him when we worked our tails off to sell copies (which we were doing for free, by the way. The incentives were things like additional trainings and coaching sessions, not money.)

HOW GENIUS IS THAT?!?! If you don’t even read the book, there’s a gold nugget of knowledge right there! Is there a way that you can give your services/products for free to someone who would be a powerful referral source for you? Why aren’t you doing that? Human referrals are worth far more than any money you could spend on social media ads. Any money you lose giving away products/services can be considered marketing money. If you’re just starting out, it’s a great way to get your stuff out there so people know you exist without spending a fortune on ads.

The premise of the book, not surprisingly, is to be different than your competitors in how you go about getting the attention of your market. One example Mike gave that really stuck with me is that in a room full of gray suits, you don’t want to have the nicest gray suit–you want to have a red one. That means that most books are going to tell you how to be the best at the game that’s already being played. Mike’s book, Get Different, is going to tell you how to change the rules by thinking outside the box.

My favorite thing about Get Different is that it’s not just theory. If it were, the previous paragraph could sum up the whole thing. Instead, he gives you real life examples on HOW you can go about getting different.

The book of his that I never finished was Surge. I’ve read every other book that he’s published, some multiple times, but I couldn’t finish Surge. It was filled with SO MUCH THEORY and not enough application. I was thinking, “Yes Mike, I believe you, but HOW do I do that???” I wasn’t left feeling that way with Get Different. My copy was filled with notes of how I could improve my business. (I saw “was” because I gave it away as a gift to a potential client–who ended up signing. Just another trick I picked up in the book ;))

Will Get Different help you in your business? ABSOLUTELY…. unless…..

….. you are too afraid to be different. It’s kind of embarrassing being the only red suit in a room full of gray ones. You have to be brave to try something new.
