The Power of Habits and Consistency

If you have yet to read Atomic Habits by James Clear, you are missing out on powerful ways to transform your life. From how to have good habits to tips on consistency, entrepreneur or not, anyone can benefit from this fantastic read. We aren’t going to give away all his secrets, but here are some of the most influential tips discussed in his book.

  • Build Habits that Work for Your Personality

“You don’t have to build the habits everyone tells you to build. Choose the habit that best suits you, not the one that is most popular.”

This direct quote from Atomic Habits speaks to how all habits are not one-size-fits-all. Just because we are consistently told about the power of a “morning routine” from influencers, celebrities and others doesn’t mean that the same routine will work for your personality. Maybe you find that you are most productive in the evenings and that’s when you choose to knock out your “morning” routine. Will you have a better chance at succeeding in the morning when you are likely to hate being up that early or when you feel that you’re in your prime in the evening? Just because a morning routine is considered “popular” doesn’t mean it will work for your personality.

  • Delayed Gratification Often Grants a Bigger Payoff

“The road less traveled is the road of delayed gratification. If you’re willing to wait for the rewards, you’ll face less competition and often get a bigger payoff.”

It’s hard not to want instant gratification, especially in a world where it seems like that’s how it always works out. Instant gratification may be the case in some instances, but the best payoffs come from patience. Are you finding that your business is taking time to take off instead of going viral and getting a quick hit of success? Viral moments are great, but they often don’t last more than a moment. Taking the longer road, pushing ahead when you want to stop and working hard will always pay off in the end.

  • Habits Are About Becoming Someone Not Having Something

When we think of habits we often think of the habit itself. The habit could be eating healthy food, going to the gym three times per week, or taking cold showers. Building the habits such as buying the healthy food to eat, going to the same gym class each day and taking the cold shower every day are about becoming someone who does those things, and ends up not actually being about the habit. It’s important to develop good habits but even more important to become the person who has good habits and does what’s necessary to follow through on the habits.
