When Should I Hire Help?

Backstory

I’m about to get really personal with this post. 

You know that I am a bookkeeper and owner of Profit Meadow Bookkeeping. 

If you have dug deeper into my story, you may know that I am a wife, mother, and Christian. 

What you may not know, even if we are Facebook friends, is that I have a chronic illness. 

At the time of writing this, the doctors are suspecting MS, but I don’t officially have a diagnosis. 

Why It Matters

When I started this business, I had no plans to hire help. I was resolved to do everything myself. I knew exactly how much work I had time to take on with my two young children at home, and I planned to handle it all on my own. 

Then, my illness started. 

It crept up a little at a time, making my workable hours less and less until I was struggling with my current client load. My body felt drained, like I had the flu every single day for months. I had no time to market or try to get new clients, but I would have had to turn them away if they came anyway. I let two clients go. 

Adapting

I don’t remember the moment or day that I decided to hire help, but I did. I spent a month making processes so that I could pass off duties to another bookkeeper working under my business name. 

IT WAS THE BEST DECISION EVER!

My clients were taken care of! I had time to rest AND time to market again! 

It was true that I had to take a pay cut in order to pay my subcontractors, but it was an investment in the growth of the business.

Today

Now, my business is thriving and has no ceiling on how many clients we can serve. I will keep finding quality rock-star bookkeepers to serve my clients, and I will continue to grow my business even if my health isn’t perfect.

What can you take away from this story?

DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE DESPERATE TO HIRE HELP!

It would have been so much easier if I had started my business with the determination to hire help when needed. It was such a huge mental block that I had to get over in order to see my business and clients succeed. 

Set up processes NOW. Document every single step to doing everything in your business on paper or video. That way, when you need to hire help, all you will have to do is send them those materials, and they can get started.
