How Do I Run My Business When I Have Health Issues?

As you may have read from my other posts, I have chronic health issues that make working difficult.

(At the time of writing this, I don’t have a definite diagnosis, but the doctors are suspecting MS.)

I have dealt with these issues for almost two years now, and I have only been in business for four. That means that most of my time as a business owner has been spent in illness, and it will most likely be in the future as well.

Here are some tips from my own experience:

Hire Help

When starting my business, I was against hiring other bookkeepers. I wanted to do everything myself, because I am a bit of a control freak.

However, my own limits were limiting my business. I had to let some clients go, and that broke me. I knew I needed to hire help so that wouldn’t happen again.

As a result, my business was able to GROW! I now wish I would have hired help sooner.

Set Small Goals

My goals for each week are simple and manageable, but extremely effective. They also don’t rely on me working every single day. That way, if I’m having a bad day, I can rest without any guilt.

Trim Excess

In your life and in your business, if you have health issues, you don’t have time to deal with anything that isn’t necessary. If you aren’t getting clients from a certain social media platform, stop putting time into it. You wouldn’t continue throwing money at something that wasn’t giving you a return on your investment, so think about your time in the same way.

Automate

Similar to the above point, if something is taking a lot of your time and can be automated, automate it! That way, if you aren’t feeling well, it will still get done. When you ARE feeling well, you can spend that time doing other effective tasks.

Give Yourself Grace

Don’t compare yourself to other people. Your struggles are specific to you, as theirs are to them. You will have days that you just can’t show up, and on those days, give yourself grace. It’s okay to rest. It’s okay to put yourself first. It’s okay to prioritize your health over your business.

It’s difficult to fight a health battle while trying to grow a business, but it isn’t impossible.
